Deer Trail - Course Report

I headed out to Deer Trail this last Friday to pre-ride the course. Why do we put on races out there? In +3 hours of riding, I got passed by 8 cars. A few of them even waved...
Town is getting ready for. The Brick Oven Pizza near staging will be open early for the morning finishers. The Feed/Grocery Store will be opened up also. Please stay and have lunch after your race in town.
  • Deer Trail to Agate - US 40 (I-70 Frontage Road) - Roads are in good shape with a few small potholes. I will see about getting CDOT to fill them. If not, I will mark them with Orange Chalk before the race.
  • Road through Deer Trail - lots of little potholes. Heads up riding through town. Slowdown and keep some distance between riders, races won't be won or lost here.
  • Rd. 217 - North/South - This is used only by the Men 1-2s, 35+ & 3s in the afternoon. Road was chip sealed a few years ago. Pavement is pretty good, with some sections that are getting some seams. Nothing bad, but rides pretty slow. It's about 7.5 miles from 34/217 intersection to the turnaround just before Hwy. 36. Some longer 1K hills. If West wind, this will be a hard section! Stay to the right side of the Yellowline coming back or you will be DQ'd.
  • Rd. 34 - East/West - Finish out and back. Road is in good shape. The bridge with 1 mile to go has been smoothed out. Chip and Seal is smoothing out more. If crosswinds, watch out for tumble weeds. :-) 3 good hills each way.
  • Wheel/Tire Recommendations - Nothing supper light or deep dished rims. Crosswinds and Chip & Seal isn't bad but will wear on you. Wear Gloves.

The hills aren't that long, but there are a lot of them and they wear you down over time. No sprinters, keep attacking and attacking. Sprinters hang on, it's flat the last 1K.
